5 Facts about Ballygarrett Church

Ballygarrett Parish Church was burned down on 15th January 1799 in the aftermath of the 1798 Rebellion. The current building was completed in 1859 and was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The towering bell tower was actually a later addition to the original barn type structure.
The original church seats were made from Pitch Pine recovered from the wreck of a cargo ship (Irrawaddy) which sank off the coast near Cahore in 1856.
The Church Bell dates from 1861 and was cast by Matthew O’Byrne, Bellfounder, Dublin
